Our guide – and now friend – Armando Cruz has accompanied us in Cuzco and Machu Picchu more times than we can count. He is so knowledgeable about Peru’s history that we learn new things from him each time we visit. One of the things that he taught us is that in spite of the overwhelming victory of the Spaniards and their success at building cathedrals in every village, town and city they encountered in order to convert the Incan natives to Catholicism, there are small signs of the native unwillingness to leave behind their original spiritual beliefs. Often, hidden in the beautifully carved and gilded decorations behind the altars of these cathedrals are representations of “maize” or corn which was offered to the gods. We send all of our friends and family to Armando’s capable hands and he faithfully awaits them in the Cuzco airport and handles all of their accommodations and travel arrangements. Feel free to contact me if you’d like to get in touch with him before a trip to Peru.
