I have been traveling to Peru for over twenty five years and while I no longer have all the passports to be able to count the number of visits, I’d venture to say that at an average of two a year, my feet have touched ground at the Jorge Chavez International airport in Lima at least fifty times. That’s a piece of information I try not to dwell on too much since I walk around thinking it’s only been a few years since I graduated from college. A recent trip to my alma mater forced me to accept that I no longer blend in on campus with the other undergrads. Still, when strangers meet my oldest daughter, a recent college graduate herself, I am quick to point out that I was barely a child myself when I had her. It’s not too far from the truth since I met my husband while still in college and after a whirlwind romance, married him months later.
My husband is a native of Peru and he has been my companion on most of my trips to his homeland, often to parts of the country that he had yet to experience previously! The whole adventure started with loving the man, and it is true that love expands the heart because now I also love the country and the people of Peru, who are both proud and humble in a delightful combination; I’m fascinated by the cultural history and the incredible food, the remarkable landscape and the artisan handicrafts…and did I mention the food? I have much to say on that subject!
Until the next time.,.
