The Lord of Sipan Tomb Discovered in Peru

When I was in Lamboyeque last year, I visited the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Sipan for the second time. This museum displays the riches discovered in the royal tomb of the Lord of Sipan, a Moche ruler in the 2nd century A.D. It also displays the artifacts from two other tombs. Archeologists found these tombs largely intact, and this is why there are so many fabulous artifacts. This beautiful modern museum is shaped like an ancient Moche pyramid temple, and the inside is divided into three levels. It has on display some of the most stunning gold jewelry I have seen. On the bottom level is an animated full scale model of the Lord Sipan’s court. It is a moving experience to see this culture brought to life in such realistic fashion and I left the museum both dazed and enlightened. Even after two visits, I am compelled to return to absorb even more of this rich cultural experience.
