Did you know that sunflowers are native to Peru? Europeans first encountered sunflowers there, as they began to explore South America. Incas worshipped sunflowers as images of the Sun God, and Spanish travelers brought back golden figures of the flowers, as well as seeds, when they returned to Europe. Today, sunflowers are popular in many parts of the world, but Peruvians know they originated in their country, growing wild as part of the beautiful Peruvian landscape.
