Three hours south of Lima, Peru, is the coastal city of Paracas, where I purchased tickets for a small boat tour to the Las Islas Ballestres in the Bay of Paracas. This is the only way humans can see this wildlife haven. It is a government protected sanctuary for thousands of marine birds such as pelicans and penguins. But the islands are just not for birds, sea lions also have colonies on these islands. Because of its caves, arches, and rock ledges, the islands are a perfect place for birds to nest, and for the sea lions to sun. While motoring around the islands, the kids and I were able to see all kinds of sealife in and around the wake of the boat. If you can’t make a trip to the Galapagos, this is the place to start to introduce your children to the wonder of the natural animal world. A half day excursion, it evoked joy and wonder in my children’s eyes.
